Cloud Migration: What No One Tells You Before You Move

Cloud Migration: What No One Tells You Before You Move

Every technology vendor will tell you that moving to the cloud will save you money, improve performance, and solve your scalability problems. Some of that is true. But cloud migrations that are rushed, under-planned, or treated as a simple "lift and shift" regularly deliver the opposite of what was promised.

The Lift-and-Shift Trap

The most common mistake in cloud migration is treating the cloud as a remote version of your on-premises server room. You take your existing virtual machines, move them into cloud instances, and assume the job is done. The result is almost always higher costs and lower performance than what you had before, because cloud pricing models reward applications designed for the cloud — not ones simply transplanted into it.

What a Good Migration Actually Looks Like

A well-planned cloud migration starts with a thorough audit of your current environment: what systems you run, how they depend on each other, what your performance and availability requirements are, and what you actually spend today. From there, workloads are classified into categories — some are good candidates for cloud-native services, some are better suited to hybrid models, and some (particularly latency-sensitive or compliance-constrained applications) may be best left on-premises.

  • Application dependency mapping before any workload moves
  • Cost modelling using actual cloud pricing calculators
  • Security architecture review — cloud environments need different controls
  • A clear rollback plan for each phase
  • Staff training so your team can operate the new environment

Compliance in the Cloud

South African businesses subject to POPIA need to know where their data lives. Cloud providers operate data centres globally, and not all of them keep your data within South African borders. This has implications for POPIA compliance and for certain regulated industries. Your cloud architecture must account for data residency requirements from the outset.

At ITEX, we design cloud environments that balance performance, cost, and compliance — and we stay involved through migration, stabilisation, and ongoing management.
